I enjoy working with really intense light. I love it when vibrant colors streak
across the clouds and the world looks like it is on fire as in “Arctic Red
Morning”. It’s easy to go through a roll of film on days like these.
In November of 2004 for three continuous days the light was really subtle. I
might have put a single roll of film through the camera over that combination of
days.
On the days when really intense light was available I struggled with finding an
image that would bring out all of the deep purples that would appear just before
the sun would crest the horizon. I couldn’t get it to work. I tried a
combination of set ups and used a number of frames of film but couldn’t get the
image to come out right. What I didn’t know is that I already had the image.
While putting together the photographs for this show I bumped across this image
which had come from the days when the light was really subtle. I liked the way
the Flatirons and the foreground worked together but I wasn’t sure whether the
color was going to be deep enough. It wasn’t until I saw the image enlarged that
I realized I had the deep purples I had been looking for. Sometimes more is
less.
