This photograph is a great example of two different lessons in photography. The
first is that light, the active ingredient in any photograph, changes very
quickly at sunrise and sunset. The second is not to be so focused on what is
happening in front of you that you miss what is happening behind or to the side
of you.
"Arctic Red Morning" and this photograph were taken on the same day. I know they
are very different images and you would think days would have passed between the
images but it was only a few minutes and the shifting of the indirect rays of
the sun on the clouds.
Minutes can change the entire look of an image, so it=s crucial to work quickly
and release the shutter when it looks right. I've lost images before because I
didn't have a satisfying composition, or I thought the light would get better. I
can't tell you how frustrating that is.
It=s very easy to get focused on what is in front of you and to forget about the
rest of the environment. Had I not turned to look to the South this image
wouldn't have never made it to film.
