Long before I ever release the shutter on an image, long before I take the lens
cap off and look through the viewfinder, I try to connect with the environment
around me.
I=m not glancing over the environment, and seeing sand and bushes and water. I=m
really looking, seeing the shapes and the forms and picturing how the image will
come together. For instance in this image; Is the ocean going to be visible from
this angle? What is drawing me to the image is the way the lines are sculpted
into the sand. The ways the footprints are partially filled. Do I want to
highlight those footprints more? Are there better footprints around? Do I even
want to include the ocean? All of these thoughts and many more run through my
head as I begin to select and shape the image.
You would think with all of the thought that goes into composing an image I
would remember all sorts of details about it. But what I remember when I look at
this picture is that I had been sleeping in a tent for about 5 days and I just
could not get comfortable. I had tried everything to get my high performance
lightweight inflatable pillow to work. It just wasn't happening, it kept
deflating on me, so I had stopped in a Target store just before going out to
photograph to buy a pillow.
The other thing I clearly remember about this image was hearing something or
feeling something that made me turn around and seeing my car key lying on top of
the sand. It would have been one long walk home from Orrick, CA.
