In May of 2004 I was fortunate enough to attend a workshop at the late Galen
Rowell's Mountain Light Gallery in Bishop CA with National Geographic
Photographer Frans Lanting. This photograph and "Ink" both came from that
session.
The subject in both photographs is a bristlecone pine tree, the oldest known
organism, some of which are known to be 5000 years old.
What drew me to this picture was the curls in the wood and how they radiated in
reverse directions. When I was setting this shot up I purposefully used the
branch at the bottom of the frame to lead the eye into the center of the
picture. What is interesting about this photograph is that it can easily be
turned on its side and the feel of the photograph changes. I'll leave it up to
you as to how you feel the photograph is best presented
This photograph and "Ink" are my first dablings into abstracting the details of
a subject.
