Wearied by all of the traveling I had done I was looking for a way to ground
myself. I had no idea that getting up early, picking up my camera, and venturing
out into the early mornings was how I was going to do so. January of 2004 became
a new beginning between photography and myself.
I had always worked in full sunlight with print film and it never occurred to me
that there might be another way. It wasn't until I started reading books on the
subject by a number of outdoor photographers that I began to experiment.
Understanding that color is a property of light was revolutionary to me.
Learning that I could leave the shutter open for extended periods of time (30
seconds or more) by using a tripod and numerous other basics were steps that led
to this photograph.
When I started on this project I had no idea all of the wonderful things I would
see. I had no idea how spectacular early mornings can be until I saw this sun
rise.
I had wandered around for a number of days in different locations looking for
images in 20 degree weather at 5:30 in the morning. Feeling discouraged I
continued on and one early morning in January of 2004 I saw one of the most
spectacular sun rises I've ever witnessed. I have not ever seen it repeated. I=m
sure there will be other amazing events to witness but one just like this won't
ever come again.
It=s really this image that encouraged me to pursue this project. Who knows
where it will all lead to. What I do know is I've witnessed some wonderful
events because of this image and for that I am thankful.
